The Magic of Flight: Why Marissa Loves Flying Hot Air Balloons

For Marissa, chief pilot and owner of Pagosa Adventure, flying hot air balloons isn’t just a career—it’s a passion that has shaped her life in ways she never imagined. Whether she’s soaring over Pagosa Springs with her family or introducing first-time passengers to the skies, Marissa finds joy and fulfillment in every flight.

A Love for Adventure
Growing up with a love for adventure and the outdoors, Marissa always sought new ways to experience the beauty of nature. Hot air ballooning provided her with a unique perspective, allowing her to float above the treetops and witness the world from a serene and breathtaking vantage point. “There’s something magical about seeing the sunrise from a balloon,” Marissa says. “It’s peaceful, yet exhilarating. Every flight feels like a new adventure.”

Sharing the Experience with Others
Marissa’s passion extends beyond her personal enjoyment. As a commercial pilot, she loves bringing that same sense of wonder to others. “Seeing the excitement and joy on our passengers’ faces is the best part,” she explains. “Some people have dreamed of flying in a balloon their whole lives. Being part of that experience is incredibly rewarding.”

Building Community in the Skies
Through Pagosa Adventure, Marissa has cultivated a community of balloon enthusiasts and adventure seekers. She loves participating in local events, including the Witches Fly-In and community balloon glows. These gatherings not only celebrate the art of ballooning but also bring people together to share unforgettable moments.

Flying isn’t just Marissa’s passion—it’s part of her family’s lifestyle. Both of Marissa’s parents are pilots as well as her  husband Cody, a fellow outdoor enthusiast. Two of their three children have aspirations of becoming a hot air balloon pilot and as children growing up surrounded by the excitement of aviation., no one is surprised “Our family has created so many memories through ballooning. It’s a special bond that we share,” she says. Pictured left to right, bottom row Jaiden-Marissa’s son- 18- student pilot. Peter, first solo in 1978. Julian-Marissa’s son-17. Top row. Looking to the Future
Marissa is excited about expanding Pagosa Adventure’s offerings and introducing more people to the joy of hot air ballooning. With the addition of new balloons like Purple Rain and Fifinella, she hopes to continue inspiring awe and wonder for years to come.

For Marissa, flying hot air balloons isn’t just about lifting off the ground—it’s about lifting spirits, fostering connections, and creating lasting memories for everyone who steps into the basket.
