INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF HOT AIR BALLOON PILOTS

An afternoon of Discovery!
At Pagosa Adventure, we believe that the future of ballooning lies in the hands of the next generation. That’s why we love sharing the magic of flight with young minds, sparking curiosity and excitement about the science and adventure of hot air balloons. Yesterday, we had the incredible opportunity to host a Hot Air Balloon Science Discussion—an interactive and hands-on experience designed to inspire kids to dream big and reach for the skies!
A Lesson in the Science of Flight
Our discussion started with an overview of ballooning equipment—everything from the envelope (the massive fabric portion of the balloon) to the basket, burners, and propane tanks. The kids got to see firsthand how each component plays a role in lifting a balloon off the ground and keeping it safely aloft.
Next, we dove into balloon safety, discussing the importance of pre-flight checks, weather considerations, and how pilots make decisions to ensure smooth and secure flights. Safety is at the heart of every flight, and understanding how it all works builds confidence and respect for the sport.
Watching the Winds with a Pi-Ball
One of the most exciting parts of the discussion was setting off a pi-ball (short for pilot balloon). This small helium-filled balloon helps pilots gauge wind direction and speed at different altitudes. Watching the pi-ball ascend into the sky, the kids could see how we determine 1. if flight is safe and 2. a launch location. They even made their own predictions about where it would go based on what they had learned about wind currents!
Hands-On with the Hopper Burner
The highlight of the day? Letting the kids activate the burner on our hopper balloon! The moment they pulled the blast valve and saw the powerful flame shoot into the air, you could see their excitement light up just as bright as the fire. It was an unforgettable moment that gave them a real feel for what it’s like to operate a hot air balloon.
Dreaming Big—Future Pilots in the Making
Seeing the joy and wonder in their eyes, we know that some of these kids just might be future hot air balloon pilots. Whether they pursue aviation, meteorology, engineering, or simply develop a love for adventure, experiences like this help fuel their passion and curiosity.
At Pagosa Adventure, we’re committed to keeping the spirit of ballooning alive and encouraging young explorers to dream beyond the horizon. Who knows? Maybe one of these kids will be flying Nizhoni, Purple Rain, or Piano Man in the years to come!
