If you’ve ever looked up at one of our colorful hot air balloons floating above the San Juan Mountains and wondered, “How high can those things go?”—you’re not alone! At Pagosa Adventure, we get this question all the time, and we’re excited to give you the inside scoop on altitude, adventure, and just how high you can soar in a hot air balloon over Pagosa Springs.

Let’s Talk Altitude

Pagosa Springs already sits at a pretty lofty elevation of about 7,500 feet above sea level. That means even before we light the burners and lift off, we’re starting high in the Rockies. From there, hot air balloons in our region can typically fly between 1,000 and 3,000 feet above ground level—so when you’re in the basket, you’re often cruising at 8,500 to 10,500 feet in elevation or higher!

What’s the Limit?

Technically, hot air balloons can fly much higher. The world record for balloon altitude is over 68,000 feet, but that kind of flying requires oxygen tanks, pressurized suits, and isn’t exactly what you’d call a scenic mountain flight!

For most recreational ballooning—and especially in the mountains where weather, terrain, and wind are major factors—we keep it safe and beautiful. Our typical flights in Pagosa stay well within the 1,000 to 3,000-foot range above the valley floor, which is ideal for taking in panoramic views of the San Juan River, Chimney Rock, and the Continental Divide.

Why Stay “Low”?

We call it the “sweet spot” of flight. Staying lower allows for a smoother, more intimate experience. You can wave to folks down below, spot elk in the trees, and hear the sounds of nature while still getting jaw-dropping views of the surrounding peaks. Plus, mountain flying is a unique art form—pilots have to read the wind layers carefully and make decisions based on safety and passenger experience.
