A Magical Weekend at the Red Rock Balloon Rally
This past weekend, the skies over Gallup, New Mexico came alive with color, wonder, and the unmistakable magic of hot air balloons during the 43rd Annual Red Rock Balloon Rally. As one of the largest ballooning events in the Southwest, it brought together pilots, spectators, and families to celebrate the joy of flight in one of the most stunning landscapes imaginable.
The Experience
From the moment we arrived, the energy in the air was contagious. The majestic Red Rock Park, with its towering sandstone cliffs and open skies, created the perfect backdrop for a weekend of ballooning. The crisp December mornings may have been chilly, but the warmth from the balloon burners and the excitement of the crowd kept everyone in good spirits.
We were fortunate to fly alongside more than 100 balloons, filling the sky with a kaleidoscope of colors that mirrored the red rocks below. Whether you were flying, crewing, or watching from the ground, the sight of balloons rising with the sun was nothing short of breathtaking.
Highlights of the Weekend
- Morning Ascensions
Each morning, pilots launched their balloons from designated sites, taking advantage of the calm winds at dawn. Seeing the balloons ascend and drift across the desert landscape was a magical way to start the day. The views from above offered a surreal perspective of Gallup’s natural beauty, from rugged cliffs to open mesas. - Glow in the Rocks
Friday night’s “Glow in the Rocks” was a highlight for both young and old. As balloons remained tethered to the ground, pilots illuminated their envelopes with bursts of fire, creating a glowing, colorful spectacle against the sandstone cliffs. The reflections of light and color in the rocks made for a mesmerizing experience. - Amigo RC Balloon Rodeo
This year, the Red Rock Balloon Rally introduced the Amigo RC Balloon Rodeo, a unique and fun addition to the weekend. Remote-controlled hot air balloons delighted the crowd as they demonstrated incredible precision and skill, offering something new and exciting for attendees to enjoy.
